Why this course exists

Every supplier knows only their part.

The airline knows its policy. The hotel knows its property. The cruise line knows its rules.

The advisor has to
connect it all.

.

Your client may not know what to ask.

They know their animal.
They may not know every form, deadline, destination requirement or barrier they could encounter.

That is where a prepared advisor matters.

.

Most training explains the rules—not the trip.

Knowing the rules
is important.

Knowing how to apply them to a real traveler, a real service animal and a complete itinerary is something different.

"Animals Allowed” does not mean the trip will work.

A service animal may be permitted, but that does not tell you whether there is enough space, where the animal can relieve itself or how the traveler will manage the entire travel day.

Traveling with a service animal involves more than checking a policy or completing a form. Beyond the Vest teaches advisors how to understand the working partnership, ask better questions, verify the details and plan the entire trip with greater confidence.

Here's how we solve these problems.

01. Understanding the Working Partnership

Start with the traveler and animal, not the policy.

Learn the difference between service animals, emotional support animals, therapy animals and pets while understanding the working partnership between a traveler and their service animal.

After this module, you’ll know how to ask respectful questions, protect your client’s privacy and identify the functional needs that should guide the trip.

02. Air Travel With a Service Animal

Plan for the entire travel day, not just the flight.

Learn how airline policies, DOT forms, seating space, security, relief needs, connections and unexpected disruptions affect both the traveler and their service animal.

After this module, you’ll know what to verify, which deadlines matter and how to create a more manageable air-travel plan.

03. Hotels, Resorts and Accommodations

Go beyond “service animals are welcome.”

Permission does not tell you whether the room, property or surrounding environment will work for the partnership. Learn what to verify about room location, relief areas, public spaces, resort policies and the animal’s daily routine.

After this module, you’ll know how to evaluate whether an accommodation is not only permitted, but functionally suitable.

04. Destinations, Attractions, and Daily Experiences

Make sure the itinerary works after check-in.

Crowds, heat, pavement, long touring days, transportation, attraction policies and limited relief opportunities can all affect the experience.

After this module, you’ll know how to identify barriers within the daily itinerary and plan experiences that support both the traveler and their animal.

05. Cruising with a Service Animal

Prepare for the ship, the ports and everything in between.

Cruising introduces another layer of planning—from cruise-line approval and relief arrangements to port requirements, documentation and shore excursions.

After this module, you’ll know what to verify with the cruise line and how to plan for the partnership throughout the entire sailing.

06. International Travel and Documentation

Know what is required before your client reaches the border.

International travel may involve health certificates, vaccinations, microchips, import permits, destination-specific timelines and requirements for returning home.

After this module, you’ll know where to research current requirements, what needs to be documented and how to build a verification timeline.

07. Building the Complete Service Animal Travel Plan

Bring every part of the trip together.

Use what you have learned to connect the traveler’s needs, the animal’s needs, supplier requirements, documentation, daily routines and backup plans.

After this module, you’ll be able to create a complete service animal travel plan—and explain clearly to your client what has been confirmed, what is required and what happens next.

This course wasn’t built from a list of policies.

It was developed by two occupational therapy practitioners who understand that successful travel depends on how a person, an animal, the environment and the demands of the trip all work together.

With 22+ years of combined occupational therapy experience, we bring a different lens to service animal travel planning:

Clinical experience — understanding function, routines, environments, safety, sensory needs, endurance and the support people need to participate in daily life.

Travel experience — recognizing how airline policies, accommodations, transportation, destinations and unexpected disruptions connect across a complete trip.

Lived experience — supporting individuals and families with disability, accessibility and neurodivergent needs.

Beyond the Vest was created to fill the gap between knowing that a service animal is permitted and understanding how to plan for the real traveler–animal partnership.

We do not teach advisors to memorize every rule or make promises based on a supplier’s website. We teach you how to ask better questions, verify current requirements, recognize potential barriers and create a plan around what the traveler and animal actually need.

Because service animal travel is not about checking a box.

It is about creating a trip that works for the partnership.
